Research Grants

The Waikato Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory has one of the most successful research records within the School of Science and the School of Engineering. Past and present grants include:

  • 2017-2024 Associate Investigator ARC Centre of Excellence for Australian Biodiversity and Heritage (CABAH). R. Roberts, Director.  Dating budget ~AUD 440,000.
  • 2017 Marsden Support Grant. Micro-environmental madness, a new approach to radiocarbon dating estuarine bivalves ($12,610).
  • 2017 University of Waikato Stratigic Investment Fund – Novel Applications. Tri-Isotope dating ($19,150).
  • 2015-2018 AI on Royal Society of NZ Marsden Award (UOA1409): 8,000 years of hunter-gatherer adaptation: burial and bioarchaeology at Roonka, Australia.
  • 2017-2019 Partner Investigator on ARC grant DP170104665 (AUD980,500) - Testing the mechanisms and effects of abrupt and extreme climate change.
  • 2016 Grant ($20,000) from University of Waikato Strategic Investment Fund, with $20,000 matching funding from NIWA: Investigating the potential of the NIWA Ancient Kauri Archive for constructing a high-resolution atmospheric radiocarbon record to accurately align palaeoclimate proxy data and to strengthen radiocarbon calibration during OIS 3.
  • 2015 Grant from University of Waikato Strategic Investment Fund: High precision calendar age dating of Waikato Pā ($30,000).
  • 2015 - Associate Investigator on grant (CHF641,775) from Swiss National Science Foundation: Improving Lateglacial European tree-ring chronologies for accurate climate archive dating. Consolidation and extension of the Swiss-German pine chronology back to 14,000 BP.
  • 2013-2014 Partner Investigator on grant from Royal Society of New Zealand (with matching funds from the University of Waikato) for 14C analysis of Younger Dryas Stadial kauri ($15,000).
  • 2012-2013 Partner Investigator on grant  from International Mobility Fund: Assessment of Contemporary versus Late Glacial/Early Holocene climate variability based upon isotopes from the New Zealand kauri tree-ring archive ($12,000).
  • ARC Linkage Grant (LP110100180): Enhancing cultural heritage management for mining operations. The Weipa shell mounds project.
  • RSNZ Marsden Award (UOO022): The passage of time. Dating the prehistory of southern China and southeast Asia.
  • Mighty River Power Grant: Timing of the post-Taupo eruption break-out flood.
  • NSF Grant (0849407): Archaeological, geomorphological and ethno-ecological investigations of Tokelau: origins, migrations, adaptations and ecological dynamics of an atoll people.
  • FRST Grant (PROP-20224-SFK-UOA): Sub-fossil kauri collection and analysis.
  • Macquarie University Research Grant: Enhancing cultural heritage management for mining operations: A multi-disciplinary approach. The Weipa shell mounds project.
  • RSNZ Marsden Award (UOW-0606): Extending the interhemispheric 14C offset record to investigate global climatic, environmental and archaeological change.
